Welcome to Week 21!
It was an uneventful week, and that is a good thing. The story continues to move forward, and I am enjoying the process, at least after I get in the zone.
Most days, I open my computer, look for short bursts of cheap dopamine, and check my e-mails and texts. It takes me a while to settle down. Some days it’s fifteen minutes; some days, it will be a good hour and a half before I turn my full attention to writing.
After I get all the urge for distraction out of my system or have wasted enough time that I start feeling guilty at having done so, I open Scrivener—my writing app, turn Do not disturb on, and begin typing.
It’s that simple! Yet, it’s difficult to get to without going through the first part of my routine. I used to fight the distraction phase but have started embracing it. That time I spend fully immersed in writing is the best part of my working day and makes the preceding distraction well worth it.
I guess it’s difficult to focus on our projects when we are worried about missing out on the potential opportunity of the lifetime waiting in our various inboxes.
Goal: Write 2500 Words
Progress: Completed ✅
It has been a few weeks since I increased my weekly target to 2500 words, and I have consistently met that goal. May is shaping out to be the most voluminous month so far in this project. With an upcoming month of travel in June, I am focused on maximizing my progress this month.
Ideas I was trying to incorporate.
I use a service to collect my reading highlights. I go through a few of those highlights every morning to help me remember what I have read. Some of those highlights are sentence structures I particularly enjoyed. Last week, I spent an hour or two copying them into a notebook( Yep, I am that nerdy). When I sat down to write immediately afterward, I found myself trying to imitate some of those sentence structures.
Since then, I have been studying my notebook and playing with those sentences. I change the order and see how that sounds. I replace all the words but keep the basic format and see how that fits in my story. I also translate them into Nepali, my native language, and then back to English to see how that sounds. Studying and deconstructing sentences that draw my attention has been a fun way to learn from the works that inspire me.
Ideas from previous weeks:
Goals for this week
Write the next 2500 words.
As always, thank you for following along with my writing journey. Until next time, keep writing and stay inspired.
